Exhibit 1

The Hoarder

This piece is a mix of irony and aesthetics about toilet paper hoarders. Till this day I still don't understand why people went crazy over toilet paper of all things... Assuming that most of them probably didn't need that much and caused others to be in shortage, I created this self-portrait to express how advantaged people sometimes take for granted what they have. I wanted this to have a fancy, sophisticated atmosphere (almost like a Renaissance painting), and a relaxed, carefree expression. In other words, I represent the privileged people, and having too much toilet paper to even care about waste, I make clothes out of it. I was inspired by the clothing folds in Renaissance's "Birth of Venus" painting and wanted the paper to flow like that. As a model specialized in high fashion, I had a strong desire to make this look strange yet aesthetically pleasing, and I think I achieved that thanks to the strong contrast between the white paper and burgundy background, the toilet paper folds, and my body's pose.

The only tool I used to create this is my cellphone camera. First, I had my mom wrap me up in toilet paper. Then I stuck my phone to the ceiling in selfie mode and placed the toilet paper rolls around me. Next, lied down on the curtains and asked my mom to place her hand in front of my phone when I was ready (my phone takes a picture when it senses a hand). Just like that, the picture was shot! I did not feel the need to edit it either.
