Exhibit 6
Empty City
This GIF was inspired by the animals returning to their habitats or even urban spaces due to the lack of humans in the streets. Some say that dolphins and swans went back to Venice, but since we don't naturally have those animals in North America, I wanted to make something closer to home with our own animals. The GIF is made up of 6 frames: the initial street, two pigeons flying in, tons of pigeons, squirrels, deer, and vegetation. I put them in order of accessibility and commonness. Each frame was edited separately by adding new animals and removing old ones to not make the picture too full. I used Photoshop to add the animals, remove their background, resize and place them on as new layers. I also used Photoshop to animate it into a GIF. The meaning behind this is that nature with reclaim its place and prevail no matter what. We are powerless against nature, unless we destroy it, which would destroy ourselves too. Even such an urban scenery can be claimed by animals with time if humans are gone. On a larger scale, even if we pollute the planet to a point where nature dies, we will end up dying as well, and once we disappear (just like how we disappeared from the streets during the past months), nature will slowly slowly restore itself over hundreds, thousands, million years. Except we won't be there to see it. So global warming isn't the death of the planet, it's only the death of humanity. But I am digressing -- back to this GIF, it just shows the positive side of humans leaving nature in peace for a few months. Below are the 6 frames in individual enlargeable images.
